All About . . . Magnets
Magnets have strange powers! They can pull objects toward them or push away other magnets. The first magnets were pieces of lodestone. This black mineral was used by early mariners to find magnetic north. It is frequently called a natural magnet.
Magnets make it possible for TVs, CD players, and radios to make sound.
Computers use magnets to store information.
Magnets have two poles. One is called the north pole and the other is called the south pole. The north pole of one magnet will attract the south pole of another magnet--in other words, opposites attract. But when the north poles of two magnets are brought near each other, they will push away (repel) each other. Magnets can have different shapes and can be made of different materials.
